Muskegon Area Trails
Muskegon Lakeshore TrailThe 12-mile Muskegon Lakeshore Trail travels along the southern shore of Muskegon Lake from Pere Marquette beach to North Muskegon. Spend an afternoon on this winding paved path and you’ll see why Muskegon is one of Michigan’s top tourist destinations. The trail offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake as it winds among the dunes and through several parks and marinas along the way. The trail provides direct access to the Lake Express ferry terminal where you can catch a ride across Lake Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Construction is slated to begin Spring 2011 on the 14-mile Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail, which will connect the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail to Whitehall and the Hart-Montague Trail State Park. It will be built on an abandoned section of the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad. The trail was named after a former junction of the railroad that linked Whitehall and Fremont.
Laketon Trail
The 4-mile-long Laketon Trail is an important connector that links the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail to the Musketawa Trail. Most of this nicely landscaped paved path was built on an abandoned rail bed that runs parallel to Laketon Avenue. To connect with the other trails at either end, you must ride along some city streets. To connect with the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail, head east on Grand Avenue and north on 8th Street, then east on Western Avenue and north on 7th Street. To connect with the Musketawa Trail, go east on Keating Avenue and then south on Latimer Drive and Black Creek Road to the trail entrance just north of Sherman Boulevard.
Scenic Drive Connector Route
For cyclists seeking the best scenery on the lakeshore, the Scenic Drive Connector Route is a rewarding adventure. This newly paved roadway guides you from the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail to Whitehall through towering dunes and along golden beaches. From the Lake Muskegon Nature Preserve parking area, following Lake Street west to Ruddiman Drive to Scenic Drive. At Muskegon State Park, venture north along Scenic Drive past Pioneer County Park and Duck Lake State Park, then along South Shore Drive to Whitehall and Hart-Montague Trail State Park. The toughest part of this road route is the killer “Blockhouse Hill” in Muskegon State Park, but the tantalizing views make it well worth the effort.
